Almacenes Al Pelayo, that milestone in the memory of the people of Oviedo

The rise and fall of Galerías Preciados in Oviedo

WILLIAM GUITER

Years pass and, after the Civil War, Delgado leaves Secades and takes charge alone. He had learned the trade with tenacity and intelligence: he began to transform the "very conventional" store, with large counters and wooden shelves, into modern department stores, distributed in several adjacent premises, at street level, at numbers 44 , 46 and 48 de Uría, with large showcase galleries and up-to-date furniture”, explains Rodríguez-Vigil. In the mid-1940s he created the famous "Two for One" which had an overwhelming success. Sales are going from strength to strength.

Finally, in the 1960s, Máximo Secades bought the entire property from the Polo family and demolished it. In his place, a block of renowned architects Francisco and Federico Somolinos will be built from 1964. These are the years of developmentalism, and Al Pelayo is not far behind in its modern style of North American department stores.
