A heroic boy saved his family from a fire upon waking his parents, who could not smell the smoke as they recovered from Covid-19.
The rapid actions of the two -year -old boy allowed his father and mother firefighters to leave the house along with his five children before the flames destroyed her.
"Our fire burned so fast and so hot that we were very lucky to have left when we did," Kayla Dahl told The Sun in an exclusive interview.
"If it had been just a minute later, it would have been a completely different scenario".
The fire broke out at the family's house in Alvord, Texas, on January 15 around 4:30 a.m..m.
Kayla said she woke her 2 -year -old son brandon at the foot of her bed, trying to wake her up, which is not unusual for the girl.
But he knew that something was wrong when he heard him cough and say: «Mom, hot!Mom, hot! "
"When I opened my eyes and looked at him, I was really cloudy by smoke," he said.
"I looked towards the bedroom door and I could see the flames in the living room that came from that direction to us".
Kayla and her husband Nathan were recovering from Covid and lost the sense of smell, which meant that they could not smell the smoke.
He said that their smoke detectors, which had less than a year, were not yet activated.
Little Brandon, who was also sick, was asleep before in the living room, where he could now see 6 feet flames.
"When it comes to the fact that he approaches us, all we can attribute is the fact that God had his arms around him," said his mother.
"He had a guardian angel who helped him protect him and took him to our room that morning».
Thanks to Brandon, their parents immediately took their five children out of the house with nothing more than the clothes they were wearing.
Escaping from the house quickly was something that the family practiced, since Nathan has been a volunteer firefighter from the local fire department during the last six years.
Once they were out and safe at a neighbor's house, Kayla said he felt relief to know that his family was unharmed.
"Until I turned around and I saw everything we had worked as hard to build as a family, it simply disappeared".
The flames quickly wrapped the house and Kayla's truck. The photos show nothing more than a few columns that remain vertical.
Nine fire departments ran to their neighborhood and turned off the fire while working to protect the houses of their neighbors.
Kayla said it was a cold and windy morning, with bursts of up to 70 miles per hour, which made the fire even more dangerous.
Kayla said that if her young son had woken them up minutes later, things could have been very worse.
"It is definitely our hero, and it will always be our hero," he said.
While Brandon still does not understand the impact of his actions that morning, Kayla said he enjoys the additional attention he has received.
"He is an incredible child.I think he will do incredible things as he grows up, ”he said.
"We can only expect you to continue in your [dad’s] steps one day and become a small firefighter".
She wants anyone to listen to the story of her family know the importance of always having a security plan, and also teaching children.
While the Dahl work to rebuild their life, support from all the United States has come in a gofundme made by Kayla's best friend.
They have achieved enough money to furnish and rent a new place.
His hope is now to build a new house in the property where the house burned to the foundations and have it ready for Christmas.
They give all the credit to God and their son for saving their lives, but they also had advice for other families.
"Be sure to hug your children and your spouse, and tell everyone that you love them," Kayla said.
"I mean, tomorrow was never promised, but it is a blessing to have it".
