The colorful papanoelada returned to tour the streets of Lugo this Sunday and brought together nearly four hundred motorcycles that starred in a striking parade that was widely followed and applauded throughout the city. But the appointment ended in disappointment, since the Police intervened at the final stop, in Augas Férreas, and ordered the bikers to vacate.
"They told us that they were going to photograph all the license plates and fine us if we didn't leave," recounted one of the participants, while another of the attendees recounted that the agents told them that they were intervening because they had received twenty calls from neighbors complaining about the noise and the excessive speed.
Participants denied the majority that they had exceeded the speed limits. "It was circulated twenty kilometers throughout Lugo, first because with hundreds of motorcycles it is no longer possible to run and, second, because the meeting is to go slowly, greeting the children, which makes them very excited," he said.
It is true that when arriving at Augas Férreas, the final stop of the papanoelada, many motorcycles entered the square, since there was no place to park such a number of vehicles. And the organizers had not requested prior permission from the City Council because they did not expect to gather hundreds of people.
Although the two previous appointments had already been very popular, last year the papanoelada could not be done due to the covid and the organizers, the Rozamurallas club, did not have a large participation this year. In fact, they hardly publicized the event, they only announced it on a couple of social networks.
But in the end, bikers from Asturias, A Mariña and even Vigo arrived at the parade. These are biker meetings that are held all over the country and that are very popular, and the unexpected concentration of motorcycles on Sunday came to prove that the one in Lugo has a lot of pull.
After the eviction order, confirmed by numerous bikers although the City Council denied it, the organizers only regretted not having taken the opportunity, as has been done in previous appointments, to put a solidarity objective at the meeting.
In the previous one, in 2019, it was decided to start a fundraiser in favor of Somos Unidos por el Cancer and enough money was raised for research. In addition, the bikers went to the Hula that day to deliver stuffed animals to sick children. Given the success, they already contemplate recovering that solidarity appointment in 2023.
