10 fashion tips we learned from early fashionistas and bloggers

Fashion blogs (do you know all of these?) reached their peak in 2009, it was a key year in the evolution of these 'amateur' websites, or so they were considered until then by the sector, until the luxury firm Dolce & Gabbana decided to do something unprecedented: invite bloggers Garance Doré, Bryan Boy, Scott Schuman and Tommy Ton to their show and seat them in the 'front row', that is, in the very first row. This fact was considered the official arrival of the 'bloggers' in the fashion industry: brands began to create collaborations with them, to invite them to events, catwalks and give them their designs. They even conquered the press, many blogs moved to the websites of some magazines. But, without a doubt, one of the most important things that the first 'fashionistas' did for fashion was to change the rules of the industry, breaking with the existing hierarchy: they democratized the sector. Here we leave you this and some other things that we can learn from the original 'bloggers' (in addition to how their style has changed over the years):

1. They democratized fashion

The fashion industry stopped being so hermetic. The blogs allowed anyone to share her vision or express her opinion on the sector. The 'fashionistas' changed the course of fashion. Of course, over the years, bloggers gradually left this platform aside and began their journey on another: Instagram. The term 'blogger' fell short and they went on to become 'influencers'.

2. Be authentic

The perfect example of an 'influencer' is embodied by Chiara Ferragni, one of the most successful 'fashion bloggers' in the world and one of the first in the world. She started her blog The Blonde Salad in 2009 to show her outfits and, little by little, her website became professional (and monetized) to such an extent that the case of Ferragni, her success, is studied at Harvard (as she explains in his documentary). She is one of the international 'bloggers' who has evolved more and better, both in her 'look' and in the approach to her publications. The key to her success lies in being authentic, yes, without losing an ounce of glamour. We can see her in her profile wearing a haute couture suit in the most exclusive places and, the next day, in a tracksuit, without makeup and playing jokes with her husband and children. And that is, as she well knows, what she sells the most on the networks today: being (or at least appearing) natural.

3. The importance of the basics

Dulceida is another of the best-priced faces of the 'influencer' phenomenon. The Catalan, Aída Domenech, has managed to remain faithful to her style; simple but powerful with which she already triumphed in Fotolog back in 2008. Dulceida's looks have been evolving towards a more sophisticated version as she became an ambassador for countless luxury brands. But if something remains intact in her, it is the particularity of her style, her simplicity. The basics are the great protagonists in her outfits. Her outfits, especially those of everyday life, combine luxury garments with others that, at first glance, anyone could have in her wardrobe. We all like to see aspirational 'lookazos', but we like even more to be able to version them with 'low cost' garments.

4. Idyllic outfits without falling into superficiality

Fashion prescriber Nicole Warne is considered one of the best international bloggers. In its beginnings, the goal of her Gary Pepper blog was to sell vintage clothing (do you know the best online stores?) where she herself acted as a model along with her magic formula for creating 'outfits': playing with colors, taking risks, mixing textures... Her personal touch is the 'lady' style, always accompanied by the latest trends. Her idyllic photographs of her all over the world and the high-quality content that she shows on social networks are, in part, a reflection of her style: a perfect dose of an impeccable world but without falling into the extravagance or the superficiality.

5. Less is more

In 2009, Gala González was already posting from London on her Amlul blog. There she was studying Fashion Design at the prestigious University of Arts (UAL). In Spain, she has been one of the forerunners in terms of creating digital content. Her outfits are among those that have best evolved over time, Gala has always known how to reinterpret trends by betting on timelessness and taking them to her own style: her hallmarks are neutral tones, monochromatic 'looks', shorts , which is used from spring to autumn, prolonging its life during the meantime; and two-piece suits. Her success lies in the simplicity and in that 'je ne sais quoi' that the 'fashionista' has to give any styling that comes her way a delicate, 'preppy' and elegant touch under a 'look' apparently without many complications.

6. Perfect balance: a 'casual' very 'glam'

Julie Sariñana also founded her space on her website called 'Sincerely Jules' in 2009. When she started she was practically a teenager and the 'looks' that she showed at that time were quite simple. Over the years, Julie has become one of the main international influencers of reference. And it is not surprising, because her impeccable style inspires thousands of people: her outfits are simple but refined. Comfortable and elegant, 'sloppy' at first glance but with great control in every detail. In short: perfect. In addition, it is also important to highlight the fact that she lives in California with an eternal summer that keeps her tanned 365 days and her photographs are always ideal. In 2021 she continues to ride the wave, amassing over 6 million followers on her Instagram profile.

7. Prints today and always

Alexandra Pereira, who became known in the world of blogs as Lovely Pepa, started her online blog in July 2009. In the beginning, she was always accompanied by her dog, who is the name of the avatar of her on the net. Since then, her success has grown exponentially, even walking for Dolce & Gabbana. Alexandra Pereira's looks have undergone a clear evolution throughout this time, and even during the pandemic her snapshots have become more sober, but something that remains intact in her is that the outfits that are most successful on her profile are those where prints are protagonists. A good 'print' never disappoints. Neither online nor in real life.

Thanks to these professionals who succeed with her looks on social networks, and after more than a decade of blogging behind her back, the consumers of her publications have thousands of examples to pose in the photographs and go out always favoured. Silvia was one of the pioneers in this online influence through her blog Bartabac, in which she continues to share her outfits and recommendations.

10. The importance of plugins (and trust)

We have started by saying that, for consumers of this type of content, aspirational styles score double if they are mixed with clothes from high street stores, and that the perfect balance is found in looks that are markedly informal with a glamor point. However, we would be lying if we said that we would not spend hours reviewing the profile of influencers like Blair Eadie on Atlantic-Pacific, the blog that she has been feeding since 2010. If Blair has taught us anything, it's that no style is complete without the right accessories, and she likes the 'statement pieces', that is, those absolutely stunning pieces (and almost always maxi size) that provoke sighs.

Aside from these absolutely desirable accessories (and clothes), the best thing about Blair Eadie's content is not 'what she wears' but how she wears it: that sheer, exuberant confidence that doesn't make her look dressed up at all, and makes her a woman who transmits her passion for fashion, in capital letters, in each post.
