Stylist Tips: Do you have a virtual job interview? Dress like this and hit

Just over a year ago, 60% of companies had to face a new situation: telecommuting. A way of life that almost 2.86 million Spaniards continue to maintain today, according to the most recent data from Accentur. And if virtual meetings with your boss or chat conversations between colleagues have already become part of our work routine, so has a new video call job interview format, preferred by many companies at this time in the that the new normal is not as real as we would like. Do you have a video selection process coming soon? The influencer and fashion consultant Natalia Cebrián, who also works through virtual appointments, explains to us which garments will suit you best in front of the camera, which ones convey confidence to your interviewer and which shades or accessories you should avoid. So that you only worry about what is important, concentrate on embroidering your answers.

The garments that look best in front of the camera (and the worst)

What basic piece of clothing do you think ALWAYS works in a video meeting or job interview? A safe bet is a white shirt as it brings light to the face and is a color that flatters all skin types. We can also play with its structure: strapless, with one shoulder in the air, more or less open... Without a doubt, it is a garment that works very well.

And if we want to wear a trend garment, which one would you go for? Although I usually wear neutral colors, this season I feel like some color and I've bought several pieces in mauve. So I would bet on something with color.

What clothes would you avoid at all costs? Why? Those very closed (for example, high necks) or with many volumes, very dark colors... In the end, only one part of the body is seen and we must try to make it a clear area and provide light and air to the upper body.

What colors suit you the most?

What colors should we avoid in work appointments because it can play against us, transmitting the wrong message to the interviewer? The subject of color is very personal because, although it is true that depending on our complexion, hair and others there are certain colors that work better (warm or cold), I think it is important to bet on those that give us more security before such an important event. like a work date. However, I am in favor of playing it safe: neutral and basic colors such as white, black, beige...

What tone will favor us more according to our hair color (blond, brown, brown, red) and which is the least indicated? It depends, the ideal would be to do an image consultancy with color study (on my website www.natcebrian.com you can book an appointment online) since not only hair color is taken into account but more factors influence. Although, in general, blondes favor earth colors, burgundy, pastel pink or cobalt blue. Fuchsia, yellow or green work for chestnuts. For brunettes, gray, nude or red are better. Finally, redheads also work very well with green, blue (generally in all its versions), purple, passionate red and, obviously, black.

Makeup, hairstyle... and bottom?

Would you recommend dressing up all the way or would a nice and elegant top suffice, considering the bottom is not showing? Why? I know that it is a trend that teleworking itself has created (the English call it "business on top, comfort down below", "business on top, comfort below"), but I think that, just as before a meeting we would fix ourselves completely, in the video calls we should do the same, mainly because of a matter of attitude and mentality.

Is jewelry important in those video meetings? If so, how do you recommend them to be? Totally, accessories play a very important role since they can add a touch to the look either with the color of the glasses, the earrings, the necklace or even with a headband. In my opinion, I always recommend accessories in minimal or discreet versions and avoid XXL or very flashy earrings so as not to divert attention from the call for an accessory.

How should the makeup and hairstyle be? Just as they would be in a meeting. In other words, video calls should be considered the same as a physical meeting. For me, the “sleek hair” always works and can get you out of any jam. On the subject of makeup, avoid a lot of black color in the eyes so as not to darken the look.

Other important details in a video-interview

What other elements (environment, light) should we take into account? For me the background is very important: the smoother and more neutral, the better. That is why I recommend avoiding shelves with personal photos, so as not to distract attention. On the other hand, the issue of light is fundamental: whenever possible it should be natural and should enter us from the front so as not to create shadows. A detail that is silly but that, dedicating myself to networks, I always keep in mind is, before any photo or video call, clean the camera: it usually gets dirty and creates that blurred effect of mist that makes me very nervous (hahaha).

A final piece of advice: I think that taking into account all of the above, the only thing missing is for the meeting to be interesting and to give the best of ourselves, as we would do in a physical situation.
