Fashion designs that interpret the 'momentum'

The momentum concept, which comes from physics, is used in colloquial language to express the impulse or notoriety that an idea or person has at a given moment. Can you imagine creating a clothing collection that tries to capture this concept in its designs?

This is precisely what four Fashion students from LCI Barcelona have done, which is why they have managed to be finalists in the international Arts of Fashion contest. These are the students Carla Lázaro, Ariadna Gegúndez, Mónica Pérez and Carla Sánchez, who have created four collections in which they try to capture this idea of impulse from their own personal experiences.

Organized by the Arts of Fashion Foundation (AoFF), this contest encourages students from design schools and universities from all over the world to participate with their proposals. Each year a different theme is proposed and, on this occasion, the chosen theme was precisely "Momentum".

The organization defines this concept as a word that "encompasses what we are experiencing right now around the world" and proposes, with the contest, "to use this unique moment to rethink, redefine and redesign our way of life, the way we interact with others and, therefore, the way of dressing".

Diseños de moda que interpretan el 'momentum'

The LCI Barcelona finalists have created four collections, two for men and two for women, with three looks in each. Ariadna Gegúndez's collection was based on the experience and memories of the time this young woman lived with her grandfather during confinement. For her part, Carla Sánchez has captured her passion for Korea in her men's collection, by printing postcards and photos of the country.

Mónica Pérez's proposal, a collection for women, is inspired by her own experience with dyslexia. For this reason, her pieces are asymmetrical, with an oversize or exaggerated part. Lastly, Carla Lázaro's proposal for women reflects on the pressure that many women feel on her body, and she does so through pieces that can be transformed and that can be put to different uses.

50 finalists in total

In addition to the four students from LCI Barcelona, the finalists also include two students from the LCI Education network: Quang Thai Kevin Nguyen (LaSalle College, Montreal) and Adeline Belle Santoso (LaSalle College, Jakarta).

In total, 366 students from 116 schools and universities from 29 different countries have sent their proposals in the 20th edition of the contest, among which the 50 finalists have been chosen. Their names were announced at an event held on May 21 at the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum, located in Getaria (Gipuzkoa).

Among the members of the jury was Gabriel Torres, project director of the Degree in Fashion Design at LCI Barcelona. Now the four students will materialize two of the three looks presented for the grand finale of the contest, which will take place next December in San Francisco if the pandemic allows it.

LCI Barcelona is once again one of the schools with the most representation in the final phase of this competition. It is not the first time that his students have been on the list of finalists of the Arts of Fashion Foundation. Without going any further, the student Queralt Orriols won an AoFF Apprenticeship Award - Maison Lemarié in the 2020 edition of the contest.
