During the day of reflection, demonstration and struggle on the Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, voices were raised about the serious situation of gender violence in our country. But also on this very marked day, comments and declarations that were harmful to the movement have been heard and that make this problematic situation more visible.
This is the case of Israel Díaz López, a Vox councilor in Móstoles (Madrid) who after all the municipal groups with representation in the City Council except Vox presented a motion related to the Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women launched this message: "We do not hate women, in our party there are many women of great worth, almost as much as men
In the face of these statements, which have gone viral, many women have raised their voices and have used their digital platforms to denounce these words that they have described as "sexist."
The Vox councilor has responded with this message on his Twitter account: "Obviously it was a slip. I apologize to the people who have felt offended. I am sorry that the PSOE and UP use it to attack VOX. The " I would whip her until she bleeds" by Iglesias was not a slip; neither was Dolores Delgado's "Vaginal information, guaranteed success".
Some of the women who have shared the video where Israel Díaz López is seen saying these statements have been the actress Ana Milán, who accompanied him with a "What an outrage" or the journalist and writer Mónica Carrillo.
The mayor of Móstoles, Noelia Posse herself, has shared the video on Twitter, highlighting and writing the words of the Vox councilor, and adding various media outlets to echo the news. "This is how Vox Móstoles thinks," added the mayoress, who also repeated one of the parts of the speech: "Almost as much...".
"We are fed up," other Twitter users wrote when they saw the video. "Incredible" or "Amazing" were other qualifications that could be read in the comments.
This is not the first time that Israel Díaz has found himself immersed in a controversy. On October 29, he was disapproved in plenary session after accusing one of the Podemos councilors of being a "friend of murderers and terrorists." Some statements for which he was asked to apologize, and that set off alarm bells.
Vox also had to disavow some macho statements made by a councilor from their training in the Baza City Council (Granada) during his speech, in a municipal plenary session on International Women's Day this year. Rafael Azor said phrases like: "all women like to be complimented unless they make them bitter" or "There are sports in which obviously men have much more performance than women and those sports do not have the same appeal if they a man does that if a woman does. It can be bullfighting, it can be football and how can it be many others".
Abascal also made statements that set off alarm bells on a date set for feminism, and described the 8M as "death marches" and added that those who were part of the fight "against what they call patriarchy caricature the beauty of family traditions.
Also on this 25 N, Vox has prevented Congress from approving an institutional declaration against gender violence, since Vox's "no" makes it impossible for the Lower House to achieve the necessary unanimity.
