Jorge Rey is a very young meteorologist from Burgos who is becoming famous for predicting phenomena like Filomena's well in advance. A lot is being said about him these days because he is capable of forecasting the weather based on the Cabañuelas method. You have been able to read it in La Vanguardia, El Mundo, seen on Antena 3 and, shortly, it will also appear on Telemadrid. It can be said that he is the fashionable weather man.

Today, in the middle of September, we have contacted him to find out what winter is going to be like, if we are going to have snow, cold, precipitation... To say that he has been very kind, because I have approached him hastily and we have had a long and pleasant talk.

It must be said that Jorge Rey is very young, but he already has a lot of experience. At 14 years old, Jorge is the meteorologist for Radio Espinosa Merindades, the station in Espinosa de los Monteros, Merindades region (Burgos). Jorge, first of all, what does the cabañuelas method consist of?

The cabañuelas method is not a scientific method. It is about observing Nature, understanding it. It is based on the wisdom of farmers, herders and ranchers that has been passed down for years, centuries.

The first 24 days of the month of August are taken as a model. Thus, August 1 would correspond to the first half of January. On August 2 with the first half of February… Until August 12, which would correspond to the first half of December. Then, the return, in which August 13 would coincide with the second half of December, August 14 with the second half of November... Until August 24, which would coincide with the second half of January.

Can we trust it?

The cabanuelas method has to be interpreted. There is not a single variable to take into account, there are many and each one interprets them as he knows how.

In my case, I can say that my cabañuelas are around 95% accurate and even more.

Can we get an idea of ​​what it will be like next winter?

We have to take into account that I live near Burgos, in Castilla y León, which is the area I control and from which I do have a very clear idea of ​​what winter is going to be like. Broadly speaking, it can be extrapolated to a larger area, and it could be said that, I insist, broadly speaking, it is going to be a harsh winter, with abundant snowfall and cold.

In the first half of November 2021 we will have precipitation, and in the second half the weather will give us a break. But precipitation is expected for San Andrés (November 30) and, as the saying goes: "If it snows for San Andrés, it snows much more later."

We'll end the year with snow. In other words, in the second half of December we will have snow.

We will start January with snow and precipitation, but especially in the second half of January there will be cold, frost and snow. Watch out for January 24...

February and first half of March mild, the second half of March drop in temperatures and rainfall... We already know what it means.

Do you have any bombshell similar to last year with "Filomena"?

According to my cabañuelas, in the second half of January there will be "another Filomena". We will have to be attentive to January 24, 2022.

The La Niña phenomenon affects us and, in this case, favors skiers when it is cold and snowy. In addition, what we call "climate change" also helps in that regard.

Yes. I want to be a meteorologist, and be able to make a professional living from what I like so much. So yes, I see myself collaborating with television, radio, the Internet...
