Given the latest violent events that occurred in the Riviera Maya, the governor of Quintana Roo, Carlos Joaquín González , confirmed that in two weeks agents of the Canadian Mounted Police, of the Drug Control Administration (DEA, by its acronym in English) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States.
Joaquín González clarified that foreign institutions will mainly deal with issues related to review and exchange of information, in order to improve security levels and avoid situations such as those that have occurred in recent weeks.
“In two weeks, we will be having the visit of international institutions from the United States and Canada who will come to work with us in matters of review and exchange of information and improvement to avoid situations like the one that occurred in Xcaret ,” the governor assured during an interview for Radio Formula.
He also assured that the latest violent events " far exceed " the intelligence actions by the Mexican authorities, mainly due to the fact that they are groups that "do not operate in the entity" and that are totally unrelated to the state of Quintana Roo.
The goal is to work together, assured the president, in order to identify international groups that want to extend their influence to the Riviera Maya.
The state of Quintana Roo has already added in the last six months numerous episodes of insecurity led by criminal gangs. In October 2021, for example, a shooting at a restaurant in Tulum - one of the most fashionable places in the region - left two foreign tourists dead and three others injured.
Added to this is the murder of two Canadian tourists inside the city's main tourist park and the crime of an Argentine businessman.
Last Friday, a shooting inside a hotel located in Playa del Carmen left two Canadians dead and one injured.
Regarding this case, the attorney general of the state of Quintana Roo, Óscar Montes de Oca, reported this Wednesday that the procedures have already begun to deliver the bodies of the two men who lost their lives at the Xcaret Hotel in the Riviera Maya.
“The family of one of them arrived and they have already started the procedures to take the two bodies to Canada. Once the prosecution carried out all the forensic procedures, the bodies were released, ”he said.
As for the two people detained in Playa del Carmen for their possible relationship with the homicide, a man of Mexican nationality and a Canadian woman, he explained that next Saturday it will be decided whether preventive detention is set or not.
The authorities are also investigating the shooting murder of Argentine Federico Mazzoni that occurred in a popular establishment in Playa del Carmen, on the Riviera Maya.
The Quintana Roo prosecutor, Óscar Montes de Oca Rosales, attributed the event to organized crime and drug dealing. He was referring to the Los Pelones criminal group, which for many years has held power in the main tourist destinations in the state.
“We have drug dealing problems, a great demand and supply of these substances and that is what has generated these conflicts that end in violent acts like the one we have just witnessed. In this case, the most solid line of investigation to date, what we have observed in the videos, two subjects appeared at the establishment that was already empty, they speak in what appears to be a dialogue with the victim, they go to the bathrooms and there they deprive him of his life,” said Montes de Oca.
Likewise, the prosecutor commented that the dispute over the territories for the sale of drugs has caused the gangs to become more violent every day.
However, this version is opposed to that of Victoria Mazzoni , the victim's sister, who has assured the Argentine media that her brother's death is related to political problems of her boss and owner of Mamita's Beach Club, Jorge Marzuca Fuentes, who He is accused of threats to businessman Jorge Brizuela , alias el Venezolano , who in December 2020 suffered an armed attack while traveling in his truck.
According to data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, Quintana Roo registered a total of 651 intentional homicides in 2021.
