Study reveals why we look more handsome with a mask Method used Results

The coronavirus pandemic also brought with it a new fashion style strictly governed by the use of face masks . This element, which fulfills the function of bio-security, has been transformed with each month and is already part of our daily lives.

The use of it does not seem to have an end, in the short term, but this could not be all bad. A recent study showed that the use of masks makes us more attractive , both men and women.

An article published by Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery-Global Open (PRS), entitled "Beauty and the mask", points out that the fact of hiding the lower half of the face would affect perceived attractiveness. In the first instance, it was concluded that faces covered with surgical masks are considered more attractive than uncovered ones.

Unmasked photo ratings were used to define 3 categories of attractiveness for men and women: “unattractive” (lower 33%), “average” (33%–66%), and “attractive” (over 66%).

The average of the unmasked scores of an individual face was used to place each face in one of these categories. Percent attractiveness improvement from baseline was calculated for each face after mask application, and normal analysis of variance was used to compare this between categories.

The best percentages were observed in the groups with few tractives, with an increase of approximately 42% in the ratings of women and men after the application of the mask.

In contrast, there was no difference in percentage improvement between the average and attractive groups, for both genders. Looking at changes in face ratings, we found that 100% of the faces in the unattractive group scored significantly higher after mask application.

The findings allowed the scientific community to determine the importance of the seven facial expressions and how they are limited by the use of a mask or chinstrap. That is, gestures can be misunderstood.

At the same time, they speculate that if this use of a mask is maintained, it is not ruled out that plastic surgeons will see an increase in patients seeking alterations in the parts of the body that are still visible, since they will be the only ways to express their attractiveness.
