Rituals have accompanied humanity since its origins. One could cite, for example, the payment to the land of the Inca and pre-Inca cultures. "Rituals in ancient times required exact dates, specific materials, astronomical studies...they were really complex things," says the tarologist and scholar Rafael Urbina Fletcher.

Culture and Harvest: the symbolic importance of rituals

These ceremonies are a way in which human beings seek to connect with higher beings. “Before the spread of Christianity, various cultures and groups performed rituals. Those of a religious nature were headed by priests or priestesses. But, with the popularization of Catholicism, the crusades and then the inquisition, secret occult groups begin to appear ”, adds Fletcher.

UNESCO considers that rituals and festive events constitute customs that structure the life of communities and groups, and that their importance lies in that reaffirm the identity of those who practice them, either in public or in private.

“Rituals and festivals are often held at special times and places, and remind the community of aspects of their worldview and history. In some cases, access to rituals may be limited to certain members of the community , such as initiation rites and funeral ceremonies. On the other hand, some festive events are part of public life and participation in them is open to all members of society: carnivals, New Year's festivities, the arrival of spring and the The end of the harvests are occasions for collective celebrations all over the world”, explains the organization.

Taking the latter into account, the website Somos shares twelve tips to celebrate the upcoming New Year.

1 - The 12 grapes

New Year: 12 rituals that are practiced in various cultures to receive 2022 in the best way

This ritual is universal. The tarot reader Lorena Balbuena recommends focusing on making only two wishes and then eating the 12 grapes calmly. It is not necessary to do it under the table. “Our ancestors did it under the table because they did the ritual in secret. Now there's no need to hide." Of course, the grapes are eaten before giving the respective New Year's hugs.

2 - Do a cleaning

Claudia Navarro, medium and spiritual healer, recommends that before doing any ritual it is necessary to cleanse the space of negative energies. She recommends opening the windows and burning palo santo or laurel, or going rough and invoking a being of light, according to particular beliefs.

3 - Intention a quartz

Evolutionary astrologer Mariana Vásquez recommends placing a quartz in the left (receiving) hand and placing the right hand (the giving hand) on top. She closes her eyes and repeats: "Thank you for awakening my intuition and guiding me towards my dreams in the next 12 months." Repeat "thank you" 12 times. Store the quartz and take it with you throughout the year.

4 - Make your own talisman

Tarologist Rafael Urbina recommends making our own talismans. We can put coins, herbs or quartz in a bag. Laurel for protection, cinnamon for attraction, rose petals for love. The important thing is to give it an intention and do it with faith.

5 - A cigar for the ekeko

After going around the wish fair, there was a recommendation that resonated strongly: light the ekeko a cigar. The statuette of the man loaded with saddlebags and money is a symbol of prosperity, and it is recommended, on New Year's Eve, to light a cigar, offer him liquor and put a royal bill in his hand. Of course, the ekeko must be given as a gift.

6 - Choose the color of your underwear

Yellow underwear is a very Peruvian tradition that, however, has begun to be adopted in other countries thanks to globalization. Lorena Balbuena reminds us that colors attract things : yellow for prosperity, pink or red for love, green for money. Try wearing a new garment to ring in the new year. You can make a difference.

7 - A cleansing bath

Claudia Navarro recommends, before the traditional flowering bath, a cleansing bath. To do this, it is necessary to stand under the shower and let the water run while cleaning the body with salt, from the neck to the soles of the feet, while asking to eliminate bad energy.

8 - A bath of flowering

The experts consulted agree on its importance and that it can be done in different ways. If you decide to make it yourself, mix essential salts with flower petals. You can also add flowery water, bay leaves, rue and essential oils, let it rest for an hour and then bathe from head to toe asking to attract all the good things.

9 - Immerse yourself in the sea

If you are in the sea, Mariana Vásquez recommends that you immerse yourself in it and, when you are there, visualize how the ocean purifies you of all your sorrows, anxieties and blocks. As you leave, thank the sea and Gaia (the earth) for the miracles that will be generated for you in the next 12 months.

10 - Let it rain lentils

This is a shared ritual. Claudia Navarro recommends that a person throw lentils on you (just like rice is thrown on the newlyweds). While the lentils are raining down on you, you must repeat “I am prosperous, I am abundant” and block out any doubts or negative thoughts. Like everything, with faith.

11 - Letting go: making space to receive the new

Light a candle and write on a piece of paper the things you are grateful for this year; On another sheet write the things you want to leave behind. Burn both and place the thank you leaf ashes in a pot to “grow”. You can put the ashes of the release leaf on the ground itself with two drops of honey to release with love, advises Mariana Vásquez.

12 - Write your new intentions

Rafael Urbina recommends writing our intentions on a piece of paper and keeping it with a rose petal, a bay leaf, a coin or something representative of what you are looking for (success, money, love, etc.). You can re-read that paper throughout the year to remind yourself of your purpose, We Are highlighted.
