MEXICO CITY
Surely you or one of your relatives follows the tradition of wearing red or yellow underpants on New Years, but... do you know where it comes from?
This tradition is not only carried out in Mexico, but also in other countries such as Spain or Italy. To attract love next year, you are supposed to wear red shorts during the New Year celebration. Some say that it only works if they were given to you.
This idea dates back to the Middle Ages when people were not allowed to wear red clothes because they were associated with blood, the devil, witchcraft and dark forces; however, the color also evoked life, so wearing it in winter (when nature dries up) meant abundance.
According to legend, if you wore red underwear on New Years you would bring good luck in love, get a wealthy husband or fall in love with someone you already knew.
This practice comes from countries like China and Taiwan. There the color yellow is associated with good luck.
Although here we associate yellow underwear strictly with money, in the East it is related to fulfilling dreams and ensuring good times next year.
In some cultures it is also linked to the sun, which represents the energy necessary for life.
Do you already know what you are going to wear to say goodbye to the year?
